Welcome to the Pre-MBA Accounting course! By the end of this course, you will develop an appreciation for financial accounting and various financial statements, and develop three fundamental financial statements, in their simple forms. The purpose of this course is to introduce non-business and non-accounting students to the fundamentals of accounting. You will use spreadsheet software for simple arithmetic operations. The course starts with building a background by touching upon the needs, uses, and types of accounting. The course focuses on accounting vocabulary, and some basic principles. Using examples and mini cases you learn about three fundamental financial statements: Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and the Statement of Cash Flows. You also learn how they are related to each other. The course simplifies the concepts so that you can internalize them before going for a more advanced, and nuanced course on financial accounting. This course is not geared towards producing accountants, but towards preparing business generalists who understand financial accounting. After completing the course, you will be able to: (i) Describe the scope of various financial statements (ii) Interpret simple financial statements to extract business insights (iii) Explain the relationship between various financial statements (iv) Interpret standard items in the balance sheet, the income statement and the statement of cash flows.
