In our increasingly complex world, understanding the practice of leadership is critical. In simpler words, it is the practice of influencing people to meet the challenges that will enable them to achieve important individual and organizational goals. This course provides a foundation for leadership practice and aims to take you on a journey of self-discovery. You will also gain insight into building inner stability and develop your leadership skills.

The course builds upon your experiences and aims to enhance your capacity to lead with and without authority, across boundaries, and from any political or organizational position. The course will also enable you to learn important leadership skills, clarifying the relationships among key concepts such as definitions of leadership, self-management, authority, power, influence, politics, negotiations, change management, decision-making, and various leadership styles. This knowledge will provide you with a practical and coherent theoretical framework for applying and exercising leadership. Lastly, the course explores the challenge of managing the inevitable personal stresses and dangers of leading a team. The course draws from several disciplines, such as business management, philosophy, spirituality, history, literature, sports, communications, and psychology.

Week 1: Leading the Self: Mindfulness, Inner Stability, and Positive Strengths

Week 2: Leading Downward: Leader Behaviours and Leadership Styles

Week 3: Building Sustainable Relationships: Supportive Communication and Decision-making Biases

Week 4: Power, Politics, and Leading Upwards

Week 5: Ethics, Culture, and Change Management

Week 6: Leadership and Ancient Indian Wisdom: Lessons from the Mahabharata

This is a beginner course designed for professionals from diverse work backgrounds. To succeed in this course, you should have experience about/have a basic understanding of working in organizations.

Prof. Vishal Gupta

Prof Vishal Gupta is a Professor in the Organisational Behaviour area, at IIMA. He is also the Chairperson of the Ashank Desai Centre for Leadership and Organisational Development at IIMA. ​

He obtained his doctorate in Human Resource Management from the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow, India, in 2013. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from BITS-Pilani, India. ​

Prior to joining IIMA, Prof Vishal worked as an Assistant Professor in the HRM Group at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, India. He has also worked as a Hardware Design Engineer with ST Microelectronics Pvt Ltd., Greater Noida and with Infineon Technologies AG, Munich, Germany where he was involved in the design of high-performance Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). ​

His areas of teaching and research are leadership development, mindfulness, emotional intelligence, organization development and R&D management. He has undertaken consulting projects for organizations like BSNL, DRDO, SiCOM, Tilburg University, Netherlands and Aston Business School, UK. He has been training leaders and professionals of corporations such as National Hydro-Power Corporation (NHPC), Taj Group of Hotels, Ambuja Cements Limited, Tata Teleservices, L&T, Pepsi, Emerson, and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in the areas of mindfulness, emotional intelligence, leadership and organization development for the last 12 years.​

At IIMA, Prof Vishal teaches a core course on Leadership Skills to the one-year full-time MBA (PGPX) students and courses on organisational design and mindfulness and emotional intelligence to 2-year MBA students. His research has been published in international and national journals of repute and he has written for dailies and magazines such as People Matters, Times of India, Economic times, Mint, DNA, Hindu BusinessLine, and Business Standards, among many others.
