Prof. Vishal Gupta Welcome to the ‘Advanced Leadership Skills’ course! Leaders often ask what is to have power and influence in organisations. Power is an essential to get people do what a leader wants. However, power is also toxic and can lead individuals and organisations go astray if not used wisely, with restraint and directed towards positive ends. In a world that is becoming more complex by the day, it is essential leaders think of how they wield power and influence in organisations. Leadership is the practice of influencing their people to meet organisation’s challenges. This course build on the foundation for leadership provided in the ‘Leadership Skills’ course (https://www.coursera.org/learn/leadershipskills) and takes you on a journey of exploring power, influence and trust closely. This is an advanced course designed for professionals from diverse work backgrounds. The course builds upon your professional and personal experience and aims to enhance your capacity to create ‘high trust’ organisations. The course aims to expose you to learn important advanced leadership skills such as mindful leadership, non-violent communication, handling ambiguous threats in organisation’s life, leadership transitions and successful career development, executive presence and personal branding, high-trust work cultures and the sewa principle. The knowledge of these ideas should enable a leader to lead with power and influence in organisations by gaining a practical, evidence-based toolkit as well as relevant theoretical frameworks. The course draws from several disciplines, such as business management, philosophy, spirituality, history, literature, sports, communications, and psychology. To succeed in this course, you should have experience or have a basic understanding of working in organizations. After completing this course, you will be able to: (i) Acquire an understanding of the use of mindfulness in building sustainable relationships through non-violent communication. (ii) Learn about handling ambiguous threats in organisation and how to create a culture that can respond to these threats early. (iii) Learn about handling career transitions in life effectively and create a successful career. (iv) Understand how and why some people get power in organizations, and other do not.
